How can our speech pathologists assist you?

Speech pathology, also known as speech therapy, helps children and adults develop communication skills and assists with swallowing difficulties. Speech therapy may help when people have difficulties with speaking, understanding language, talking with others, reading, spelling, listening, using their voice and interacting with people. The aim of speech therapy is to help support individual goals so someone can participate in their life, relationships and community in the way they want to.

Speech

Our speech pathologists provide therapy to improve articulation and pronunciation! We help when there is a difficulty producing a sound or one sound is being swapped for another. We work on the clarity of speech sounds to ensure the participant can be easily understood and address issues with pitch, volume, and quality of voice.

Language

Speech pathology works on: Expressive language: Improving the ability to express thoughts, ideas, and emotions through spoken and written language. Receptive language: Enhancing the ability to understand spoken and written language, including following instructions and processing information.

Social Communications & Interactions

Our speech pathologists specialise in helping participants learn how to initiate and maintain conversations, take turns, understand social cues and understand social norms so they can participate in activities that are meaningful to them. We love to practice these skills in places and with people who are important to them!

Non-Verbal Communication

By focusing on the use of facial expressions, physical gestures and body movements, our speech pathologists work to improve communication. This also includes the use of communication devices or systems (also called augmentative and alternative communication) with a range of options such as picture boards, communication books or speech-generating devices.

Swallowing

Dysphagia is the term that is used when someone is having difficulty with swallowing. Dysphagia can lead to coughing, choking or food and fluid going down the wrong way. Our speech pathologists use swallowing assessments to evaluate a participant’s swallowing function and identify difficulties. They then provide tailored strategies and support that might include rehabilitation exercises, food and fluid modification and a mealtime management plan.

Fluency

Using techniques to manage and reduce stuttering and promoting smoother speech, our clinicians work to improve participants overall quality of life through strategies to develop a more fluent speech pattern. Addressing the psychological aspects of fluency disorders to reduce anxiety helps to improve communication confidence.

Literacy

Our clinicians specialise in helping participants with the organisation of thoughts and ideas in reading, writing and spelling. By supporting decoding skills, word recognition, and understanding of text, our speech pathologists enhance a participant’s ability to recognise and manipulate sounds in words, a crucial skill for reading.
