Are you after a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Our Occupational Therapists provide a comprehensive assessment of a person’s function, capacity and support needs, across a range of daily activities, environments or change of circumstance. This could include recommending assistive technology, additional therapies, disability support workers and implement home modifications, ensuring they get the right supports to live a safe, fulfilling and meaningful life!

How can our mobile occupational therapists assist you?

Our Occupational Therapists utilise a holistic approach to their therapy sessions. Occupational Therapy is a client-centred health profession that involves therapeutic use of everyday activities to enhance a participant’s ability to engage in daily activities and situations in home, school, workplace, community and other settings. The participants goals and abilities are at the forefront of our clinician’s mind, always being considered throughout the therapy process.

Assistive Technology

Our Occupational Therapists enhance your daily life by recommending tools from long-handled reachers to voice-controlled systems for easier living. We offer everything from easy-grip utensils to advanced cooking gadgets, aiming to simplify your tasks for greater independence and life quality.

Home Modifications

Ensuring your home is safe and accessible is crucial to us. Our Occupational Therapists recommend and install modifications like ramps and grab bars to improve mobility and prevent falls, enabling you to live more independently and securely.

Mental Health

Mental health is as important as physical health. Our Occupational Therapists provide strategies and interventions to manage mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders and PTSD. By promoting engagement in meaningful activities, we enhance coping strategies, and help individuals manage their routines and relationships more effectively.

Paediatric

Our services support children's development, especially those on the NDIS. We work on improving their cognitive, physical, sensory, and motor skills, thus boosting self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Neurological Rehabilitation

Our Occupational Therapists are key in rehabilitating individuals with neurological conditions such as Stroke and Parkinson's disease. We focus on enhancing motor skills, balance, and cognitive functions, supporting participants in regaining independence and easing the transition back into daily life.

Neurodivergent

Our services are tailored to the needs of neuro divergent individuals including those who are Autistic, ADHDers, have intellectual disabilities and more! We develop strategies to address challenges with sensory processing differences, emotional regulation, independent living skill development and community access. We work closely with participants, their families and boarder care team to provide environmental modifications, task adaptations, education and skill building to achieve participant goals.

Amputee

Life after an amputation requires re-learning old skills and often learning new ones. Our Occupational Therapists provide necessary support, assisting participants in developing skills and strategies to accomplish tasks more independently, boosting confidence along the way.

Hand Therapy

Our services focus on enhancing fine motor skills, which are essential for everyday tasks like writing, buttoning clothing, and using utensils. Improving these skills can greatly enhance daily function and independence.

Adolescence

We recognise the importance of OT services specifically tailored to our teens. This includes puberty and sexuality support, key transitions (primary school - high school - high school to post high school) moving out of home, starting a job, navigating friendships, identity and belonging.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, occupational therapists at Amend Rehab can assist you with the application process for a companion card. Our team is experienced in providing support and guidance for various aspects of your disability-related needs.

Absolutely. Our occupational therapists are here to help you obtain a disability parking permit. They can provide the necessary assessments and documentation to support your application for a parking permit, making your mobility more convenient.

Yes, we see the value in completing sessions at school and will do this when we can! However, each school has their own policies on therapy sessions held at school, which we adhere to. If you would be interested in school sessions, please confirm with your child’s school first.

We understand the importance of having a clinic space and are planning on opening a therapy clinic in the future! However, we do not have a clinic available as of now and are focusing on providing therapy in a naturalistic setting. In the meantime, we may be able to host an initial meeting in our office building, in Eight Mile Plains. Please contact us if you would like to discuss further.

We provide acute mental health support, managing conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders and PTSD. However, cannot provide supports for participants actively suicidal or experiencing A-psychosis.

We see the value in face to face sessions in a naturalistic setting (which is  why we are a mobile service) but understand this isn’t always accessible to everyone. Telehealth may be an option for participants that have the capacity to engage in online sessions! Eligibility will depend  on a range of factors, including: reliable internet connection, capacity to virtually engage and having a functional computer/ laptop or mobile device. Please contact us to see if this can be accommodated for your session!

Our OT, Kevin, creating daily living independence

This participant had a stroke less than a year ago, leaving them able to only pick up large but light objects. After regular therapy sessions with Kevin, they can now perform wider range of tasks and activities regaining independence in their daily life!

Challenges Without In-Home or Mobile Occupational Therapy

The absence of in-home mobile occupational therapy in Brisbane presents numerous obstacles, significantly affecting the rehabilitation process and overall life quality for individuals with disabilities.

  • Restricted Access to Care: The journey to an OT clinic poses a considerable challenge for many, particularly those facing severe mobility restrictions, leading to less frequent therapy sessions and delayed progress.
  • Transportation Stress: Organising travel can be a source of added stress and discomfort, especially for individuals with profound disabilities, potentially worsening their condition and discouraging them from pursuing necessary treatment.
  • Breaks in Continuity of Care: Regular and consistent OT sessions are crucial. A lack of continuity can result in rehabilitation setbacks and extended recovery periods.
  • Risk of Social Isolation: The difficulty of leaving home for therapy can isolate individuals with disabilities, depriving them of valuable social interactions often found in clinical settings.
  • Customised Care: Our Brisbane-based in-home OT service provides tailored sessions that align with the participant’s living environment, ensuring exercises and interventions are directly applicable to their daily life. This level of personalisation might be challenging to achieve with standard clinic-based therapy.

What to Expect from Our Mobile and In-Home OT Sessions

Our in-home occupational therapy sessions are thoughtfully structured to meet the distinct needs of each NDIS participant, adopting a comprehensive strategy for rehabilitation and care. Participants can anticipate the following during their therapy sessions.

Each session begins with a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the participant’s current condition, challenges, and progress. This allows the physiotherapist to tailor the session to address specific needs and goals effectively.

Based on the assessment, the physiotherapist will implement a set of exercises tailored to improve the participant’s mobility, strength, and independence. These exercises are designed to be safe, effective, and achievable within the participant’s own environment.

Beyond exercises, sessions may include a variety of therapeutic techniques such as manual therapy, massage, and mobility training. These techniques are selected to alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and enhance overall physical function.

A key component of each session is education. Our physiotherapists provide valuable insights into the participant’s condition, offering advice on managing symptoms, preventing future injuries, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This educational support empowers participants to take an active role in their rehabilitation.

To ensure continuous progress, participants are provided with a customised home exercise program. This program is designed to complement in-session therapies and encourage daily practice, fostering independence and long-term improvements.

Regular sessions include monitoring and evaluation of the participant’s progress. This allows for adjustments to the therapy plan, ensuring that the participant remains on track to achieve their rehabilitation goals.
